Ping-Yi Shih
Campus Staff
I was born in Taiwan and grew up on a farm. I went to Seattle to study at the University of Washington in 1992. After graduating with my Master's degree in nursing in June 1994, I went back to Taiwan working as an instructor in a few different nursing colleges.
My family believed in folk religion and worship many gods. When taking care of patients as a nurse, I started to search the meaning of life. However, I could not find any answers. So I decided to pursue a better life.
I first attended Bible studies group in 1993 to practice my English conversation skills. Through the Bible Studies, Sunday School, Sunday services, and the work of our Lord, I realized my sin...and experienced His love and forgiveness in return. I was baptized in 1994.
God used my allergy problems to lead me out of Taiwan. He put a burden for international students on my heart, but I wanted to work in nursing first--for financial security. While trying to find a nursing job in the Seattle area in January 2001, I was unexpectedly diagnosed with osteo-arthritis. With another special condition (low WBC), it became difficult for me to work in the nursing field. I knew I could serve Him in other ways, though, if not in nursing.
I came to Portland in 2001 to study at Multnomah Biblical Seminary and finished my studies at MBS with Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies in May 2005. I have been serving international students as a campus staff at ISI since 2003.
"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways" (Isaiah 55:8). Although I do not always understand why our Lord wants me to serve international students, I can only trust and obey.
